More and more research indicates that modern weight-loss medications like Ozempic may not only help with losing weight but could also offer other health benefits. A recent article from the Dutch news platform NU.nl highlights an intriguing study from Washington University that is investigating whether semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic, can also reduce the risk of developing dementia.
Semaglutide Under the Microscope
The study is based on medical data from numerous patients with type 2 diabetes—a group known to have an increased risk of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. The researchers analyzed the impact of semaglutide on the long-term cognitive health of these patients.
The result: People treated with semaglutide had a significantly lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s compared to those taking other diabetes medications. The exact reasons for this are not yet fully understood, but scientists suspect that the anti-inflammatory and metabolism-regulating properties of semaglutide may have a protective effect on the brain.
The Next Step: Clinical Trials
These findings have attracted international attention. Several clinical studies are now underway to further investigate semaglutide’s effects on the brain. If it turns out that the medication not only aids weight loss but also plays a role in the fight against dementia, it would be a true medical breakthrough.
Important to Know
Despite the promising results, it’s important to emphasize: Semaglutide (Ozempic and Wegovy) is currently approved only for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and medically indicated overweight (BMI ≥ 27 with comorbidities or BMI ≥ 30). There is currently no approval for use in dementia. This is therefore a potential future area that still requires intensive research.
