BMI Is a Starting Point, Not a Diagnosis

BMI helps to quickly place body weight in relation to height. But this value alone is not enough to decide whether, and which, weight loss approach may be suitable.

Waist circumference, existing conditions, medication, blood values, everyday life and previous weight loss attempts also matter. That is why an elevated BMI should not be viewed in isolation.

What the BMI Categories May Mean

BMI 25–29.9

Take a closer look: Waist circumference, blood values and previous weight loss attempts may now become relevant.

BMI 30–34.9

Seek medical guidance: Risks, symptoms and possible next steps should now be assessed individually.

BMI 35–39.9

Get structured support: A clear plan can now help reduce weight in a sustainable way.

BMI 40 and Above

Plan individually: Medical guidance is especially important now to find a realistic long-term path.

BMI in Children and Adolescents

In children and adolescents, BMI is assessed differently than in adults. Although the value is also calculated using height and weight, it must always be interpreted in relation to age, sex and development.

This is why percentiles are used. A percentile shows how a child’s BMI compares with that of children of the same age and sex. The 90th percentile, for example, means that the BMI is higher than that of 90 % of the comparison group.

Fixed adult thresholds such as 25, 30 or 40 do not apply here. The Body Clinic explains how parents can better understand BMI, weight development and possible warning signs in the guide Overweight in Children and Adolescents.

Criterion Classification What Does It Mean?
below the 10th percentile possible underweight The BMI is lower than that of most children of the same age and sex and should be viewed over time.
10th to 90th percentile normal range The BMI is within the expected range for age and sex.
above the 90th percentile overweight The BMI is higher than that of 90 % of the comparison group and should be interpreted in context.
above the 97th percentile obesity The BMI is clearly elevated and should be discussed with a paediatrician.
strong increase over time noticeable development Even without one single threshold, rapid weight gain can be medically relevant.

Why BMI Alone Does Not Tell the Whole Story

BMI is a useful starting point because it is quick to calculate and gives an initial indication. However, deciding whether a weight loss programme may be medically appropriate requires more than this one value.

What matters is what lies behind the BMI:

That is why The Body Clinic does not make decisions based on BMI alone. We look at your personal situation and assess which weight loss approach may be right for you.

What BMI Does Not Show

Fat Distribution

Abdominal fat can be more relevant than weight alone.

Body Composition

Muscle mass and body type are not distinguished.

Metabolism

Blood pressure, blood sugar and blood lipids also matter.

Weight Development

Rapid changes can be medically important.

Medically Supervised Weight Loss, Tailored to Your BMI and Everyday Life

If your BMI is elevated, it can be a reason to plan your next step more consciously. What matters is not only the number itself, but which approach is realistic, medically appropriate and manageable in everyday life.

At The Body Clinic, medically supervised weight loss therefore begins with a personal assessment. BMI, health factors, previous weight loss attempts, everyday life and your goal are considered together. Depending on your situation, a programme with or without medication may be suitable.

Frequently Asked Questions About BMI

A medical assessment can be useful if your BMI is elevated and additional factors such as symptoms, abdominal fat, existing conditions or previous unsuccessful weight loss attempts are involved. A BMI of 30 or above falls within the obesity range. At that point, it is especially helpful to look at BMI not just as a number, but in a medical context.
Yes. A BMI between 25 and 29.9 falls within the overweight range. This does not automatically mean that treatment is needed. The value becomes more relevant when additional factors are present, such as waist circumference, blood sugar, blood pressure, symptoms or significant weight gain.
Yes, that is possible. BMI does not show where body fat is stored or how body weight is composed. Abdominal fat, blood values, blood pressure and family risk factors can still be important, even if BMI is not clearly elevated.
BMI can be one factor, but it does not determine on its own whether weight loss medication is suitable. Medication must always be assessed medically. In addition to BMI, existing conditions, risks, other medication, previous weight loss attempts and the personal treatment goal all matter.
Both can be useful. BMI classifies body weight in relation to height. Waist circumference can additionally indicate whether increased abdominal fat is present. For medical assessment, the combination of BMI, waist circumference and health values is often more meaningful.
