Why lose weight with medication?

Medical weight loss involves more than simply receiving a prescription. It is a physician-supervised treatment approach that evaluates whether weight loss medications are medically appropriate and how they should be combined with nutrition, physical activity, and regular follow-up monitoring. Weight loss medications are not a standalone solution. They are used as part of a structured treatment plan.

How medications can support weight loss

Certain weight loss medications can help regulate hunger, appetite, and feelings of fullness. GLP-1 based medications such as semaglutide and liraglutide act on pathways involved in appetite regulation and satiety. Tirzepatide works through both the GIP and GLP-1 receptors.

Some of these medications may also help improve blood sugar control. This can make it easier for many people to consistently follow their nutrition and exercise goals in everyday life.

Who may be eligible for weight loss medications?

Whether weight loss medication is appropriate always depends on the individual’s medical situation. Important factors include previous weight loss attempts, the degree and duration of excess weight, BMI, and possible comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea.

For several active ingredients approved in the EU, eligibility may be considered for patients with obesity at a BMI of 30 or higher, or for patients with overweight at a BMI of 27 or higher when weight related comorbidities are present. The most appropriate treatment should always be determined by a physician.

FAQs about weight loss medications

Significant weight loss cannot be attributed to any one medication across the board. The most appropriate option depends on the medical indication, BMI, comorbidities, tolerability, and previous treatment attempts. In current clinical practice, GLP-1 based medications such as semaglutide and liraglutide, as well as the dual agonist tirzepatide, are among the main options considered when medication support is medically appropriate.
The GLP-1 based active ingredients referenced on this page include semaglutide and liraglutide. Semaglutide is the active ingredient in medications such as Wegovy, Ozempic, and Rybelsus. Liraglutide is the active ingredient in Saxenda. Tirzepatide, marketed as Mounjaro, is not a pure GLP-1 medication. It is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist.
A well known oral GLP-1 medication is Rybelsus, which contains the active ingredient semaglutide. It is an oral tablet used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Many other well known medications in this category, including Wegovy, Saxenda, and Mounjaro, are administered by injection.
From a medical perspective, GLP-1 medications can be an appropriate option when there is a clear medical indication. What matters most is that treatment is not used in isolation, but as part of a broader plan that includes dietary changes, physical activity, and medical supervision. Before starting treatment, eligibility, medical history, treatment goals, and potential side effects should always be evaluated individually.
No. The GLP-1 based medications described on this page require a prescription and should only be used after evaluation by a physician. Your current page also explicitly refers to prescription medications for weight loss.

FAQ about active ingredients

Semaglutide is an active ingredient in the class of GLP-1 receptor agonists. It may help increase feelings of fullness, regulate appetite, and reduce calorie intake. Well known medications containing semaglutide include Wegovy, Ozempic, and Rybelsus.
Tirzepatide is an active ingredient that works on two receptors: GIP and GLP-1. As a result, it can affect appetite and satiety and support medically supervised weight loss. The best known brand name is Mounjaro.
Liraglutide also belongs to the group of GLP-1 based medications. It is used to influence hunger and satiety and may be an appropriate option as part of a physician-supervised weight loss treatment plan. The well known brand name is Saxenda.
Well known active ingredients used in medical weight loss include semaglutide, tirzepatide, and liraglutide. Which active ingredient is appropriate depends on the individual medical situation, BMI, possible comorbidities, and previous weight loss attempts.
GLP-1 based medications such as semaglutide and liraglutide primarily affect appetite, satiety, and blood sugar regulation. Tirzepatide also acts on the GIP receptor and is therefore not a pure GLP-1 medication, but a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist.
No. Many well known modern weight loss medications are based on GLP-1 or on a combination of GIP and GLP-1, but not every medication used for weight reduction automatically belongs to this group. The most appropriate treatment should always be determined by a physician.
