Why Medications Can Help With Weight Loss
Weight-loss medications can be a useful form of support when overweight or obesity requires medical treatment and previous weight-loss attempts have not been sufficiently successful. Many patients have tried several times to lose weight through diet, exercise, or structured eating plans, but have not been able to maintain the weight loss long term.
In these cases, medication-based treatment can help address biological factors such as hunger, appetite, and satiety. It is important to understand that weight-loss medications are not a stand-alone solution. They are always used as part of a medically supervised treatment plan.
How Weight-Loss Medications Work
Modern weight-loss medications act on the body’s own signaling pathways that influence hunger, appetite, satiety, and in some cases metabolism. Important active ingredients in weight-loss medications include semaglutide, liraglutide, and tirzepatide.
GLP-1-based active ingredients can help satiety occur earlier and may make it easier to control meals. Tirzepatide also acts on the GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Some active ingredients also support blood sugar regulation, which can be especially relevant for certain weight-related conditions.
Who May Be Eligible for Medication
Whether a weight-loss medication is suitable always depends on the individual medical situation. Important factors include BMI, the extent and duration of excess weight, previous weight-loss attempts, pre-existing conditions, current medications, and possible contraindications.
Several medications approved in the EU for weight management may be considered for patients with obesity or for patients with overweight and at least one weight-related comorbidity. These may include type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal blood lipid levels, or sleep apnea. The final decision should always be made by a doctor.
Why Medical Supervision Matters
Medical weight loss means more than receiving a prescription. Before treatment begins, it should be assessed whether medication-based treatment is medically appropriate and safe. This includes a medical history, an assessment of possible risks, selection of the appropriate medication, and clear guidance on administration, dosage, and potential side effects.
Regular follow-up during treatment is also important. This makes it possible to assess whether the medication is well tolerated, whether the dose should be adjusted, and whether nutrition, physical activity, and everyday routines realistically support the treatment goal.

They are administered as injections and contain active ingredients that can influence hunger, appetite, and satiety.
