Mounjaro Dosage: What Should You Watch Out For?
The correct dosage of Mounjaro is crucial for safety and effectiveness. Using the right dose helps achieve optimal treatment results and minimizes the risk of side effects. Here you’ll learn how to get the right dose, how to use Mounjaro properly, and how to recognize when you should seek additional medical help. We also explain what to do in such cases and how The Body Clinic can support you in treatment with Mounjaro and in using the Mounjaro KwikPen correctly.
What is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is a prescription injectable medication containing the active ingredient tirzepatide. It was originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes, but is now also used for weight management in people with overweight or obesity. Mounjaro helps regulate blood sugar and reduces appetite, which can support weight loss. It’s administered once a week using a pre-filled injection pen (the so-called KwikPen) or by drawing it from a vial. Like any medication, side effects can occur—such as gastrointestinal issues like nausea or diarrhea (for more details, see our main Mounjaro page and the Side Effects subpage).
How to Use Mounjaro Correctly
Mounjaro is available by prescription only, meaning you can only get it with a doctor’s authorization. It is administered once a week as a subcutaneous injection (i.e., an injection under the skin), either using the pre-filled KwikPen or by drawing it from a vial. Choose an appropriate injection site—for example, the (lower) abdomen (at least 5 cm away from the belly button), the front of the thigh, or the upper arm. If injecting into the upper arm, it’s best to have someone assist you. Try to inject on the same day each week to maintain a consistent schedule. The injection can be given regardless of meals and at any time of day, so pick a time that fits well into your week.
Application tips: Follow your doctor’s instructions and read the pen’s package leaflet carefully before first use. Typically, you start with a low initial dose (2.5 mg once weekly) and increase it gradually. For example, after four weeks, the dose is usually increased to 5 mg per week; further increases, if needed, occur in 2.5 mg steps, with at least four weeks on the previous dose before adjusting. This slow escalation helps reduce side effects. Use a new needle for each injection to avoid infections and clogged needles. To prevent skin irritation, regularly rotate the injection site. For example, alternate between the left and right side of the abdomen or thigh. If an injection is painful or causes irritation, try a different site next time. Always dispose of used pens and needles safely (e.g., in an appropriate sharps container).
Recommended Routine: Establish a fixed “Mounjaro Day” each week. It can be helpful to set a reminder in your calendar or phone so you don’t forget the weekly injection. If you need to switch your injection day, that’s possible—just ensure there’s at least a 3-day gap between injections. Your medical team at The Body Clinic will be happy to answer any questions about injection technique so you can use Mounjaro safely and correctly.
How Long Should You Take Mounjaro?
The duration of treatment with Mounjaro depends on your personal goals and how you respond to the medication. It is not recommended for short-term use, as stopping early increases the likelihood of regaining weight. Studies show that people can lose weight with the medication over a period of 1 to 2 years. The chance of long-term weight loss also improves with sustainable lifestyle changes, and it takes time for new habits to become routine. This shows that longer-term use is often sensible for achieving results.
Importantly, the therapy should be tailored individually and monitored by a doctor. At The Body Clinic, for example, your doctor will regularly review your progress and decide together with you how long Mounjaro should be used in your case. During treatment with Mounjaro, regular check-ups are recommended to adjust the dose or duration as needed. Never stop taking Mounjaro on your own without consulting your doctor, as this could lead to regaining weight.
In summary: treatment lasts as long as necessary to reach your health goals. Within The Body Clinic’s programs, this is continuously monitored and supported.
Missed a Mounjaro Dose?
Despite the best planning, you might forget a Mounjaro injection. If that happens, stay calm and follow the package instructions:If fewer than 4 days have passed since your scheduled injection time, take the missed dose as soon as possible. Then continue with your next regular dose on your usual day. Example: Your planned injection day is Monday, but you realize on Wednesday that you forgot. You can take the missed dose on Wednesday and then resume your regular schedule the following Monday.
If more than 4 days have passed since the missed injection, skip the missed dose and wait until your next scheduled injection day to continue as normal. Important: Never take two doses at the same time or within three days of each other. Stick to your weekly schedule. If you make a mistake or feel unsure, contact your doctor for safety.
In The Body Clinic programs, we help you stay organized—for example, with reminder services so doses are less likely to be forgotten.

FAQs about Mounjaro
Does Mounjaro Make You Tired?
Yes, Mounjaro can cause tiredness. The package leaflet lists “fatigue (tiredness)” as a common side effect. This means up to 1 in 10 users may feel unusually tired or exhausted during treatment. This general fatigue often occurs especially at the start of therapy or when adjusting the dose but typically lessens over time. If you notice persistent or very severe tiredness, talk to your doctor.
Does Mounjaro Cause Insomnia?
Insomnia (sleep disturbances) is not listed as a known side effect in the package leaflet. There is no reported link to sleep problems in the professional information. This means Mounjaro is not known to cause sleep issues. If individual patients report restlessness or poor sleep, this may be influenced by other factors. If you develop unusual sleep problems during treatment, discuss them with your doctor to clarify possible causes.
When Does Mounjaro Start Working?
The full effect of Mounjaro appears after a few weeks. According to the manufacturer’s information, the pharmacological effect begins after the first injection, with the active ingredient reaching its maximum concentration in the body within about 8 to 72 hours. Most people experience some weight loss in the first week. After 12 weeks, a weight loss of 5% of the starting weight is often achieved.
How Long Does a Mounjaro Pen Last?
A pre-filled Mounjaro KwikPen contains four doses of the medication—so it lasts exactly 4 weeks with weekly use. After the fourth injection, the pen is used up and should be disposed of. Usually, Mounjaro is supplied in packs containing, for example, 3 pens (12 doses) for 3 months or 1 pen (4 doses) for 1 month. Important to know: after 4 doses there will be a small residual amount in the pen that does not correspond to a full dose and should not be injected. The pen, with this leftover, must be disposed of after the fourth (i.e., final) dose. To ensure uninterrupted treatment, plan your doctor’s appointments and your next pens in advance.
Can I Buy Mounjaro Without a Prescription?
No. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine and cannot be bought over the counter. You can only get it with a valid prescription from a pharmacy. Offers selling Mounjaro without a prescription are almost certainly untrustworthy and potentially dangerous, with risks of counterfeit or improperly stored medications. To protect your health, always obtain Mounjaro through official medical channels—after consultation and prescription by your doctor.
