Side effects Mysimba

Like all medicines, Mysimba can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Serious side effects

Tell your doctor or pharmacist immediately if you notice any of the following serious side effects:

  • Suicidal thoughts or depression: The incidence of the side effects suicide attempts, suicidal behavior, suicidal thoughts and depression is not known and cannot be estimated based on the available data on people taking Mysimba. There have been reports of depression, suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts during treatment with Mysimba. If you think about harming yourself or have other worrying thoughts, or if you feel depressed and notice that you are getting worse or experiencing new symptoms, tell your doctor immediately or go to hospital straight away.

Rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people treated)

  • Seizures (epileptic seizures): Symptoms of seizures include convulsions and usually loss of consciousness. If someone has had a seizure, they may be confused afterwards and have no memory of what happened. Seizures are more likely if you take too much, if you are taking some other medicines or if you are at increased risk of seizures.

  • Erythema multiforme and Stevens-Johnson syndrome: Erythema multiforme is a serious skin condition that can affect the mouth and other parts of the body. Red, usually itchy patches appear, starting on the limbs. Stevens-Johnson syndrome is a rare skin disease in which severe blistering and bleeding occurs on the lips, eyes, mouth, nose and genitals.
  • Rhabdomyolysis: is an abnormal breakdown of muscle tissue, which can lead to kidney problems. Symptoms include severe muscle cramps, muscle pain or muscle weakness.
  • Lupus rash or worsening of lupus symptoms: Lupus is an immune system disorder that affects the skin and other organs. If you experience lupus flare-ups, rashes or lesions (especially in areas exposed to the sun) while taking Mysimba, contact your doctor immediately as treatment may need to be stopped.
  • Serotonin syndrome: Serotonin syndrome may be manifested by changes in mental status (e.g. agitation, hallucinations, coma) and other effects such as increased body temperature (above 38 °C), accelerated heartbeat, fluctuating blood pressure, increased reflexes, muscle rigidity, lack of coordination and/or gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g. nausea, vomiting, diarrhea). gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g. nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) when Mysimba is taken together with drugs for the treatment of depression (e.g. paroxetine, citalopram, escitalopram, fluoxetine and venlafaxine).

  • Fear
  • Dizziness or spinning dizziness – feeling “wobbly” (tremor)
  • Sleep disorders (make sure that you do not take Mysimba shortly before bedtime)
  • Altered taste sensation (taste disorder)
  • Dry mouth
  • Concentration difficulties
  • Feeling tired (fatigue) and drowsiness, dizziness or lack of energy (lethargy)
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Hot flushes
  • Increased blood pressure (sometimes severe)
  • Pain in the upper abdomen
  • Abdominal pain
  • Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)
  • Rash
  • Itching (pruritus)
  • Hair loss (alopecia)
  • Irritability
  • Feeling of disorientation

Occasionally (may affect up to 1 in 100 people treated)

  • Hives (urticaria)
  • Hypersensitivity
  • unusual dreams
  • Nervousness, feeling “out of it”
  • Tension
  • Restlessness
  • Mood swings
  • Trembling of the head or a limb that gets worse when you try to perform a certain function (intention tremor)
  • Balance disorders
  • Loss of memory (amnesia)
  • Tingling or numbness of the hands or feet
  • Motion sickness
  • Belching
  • Abdominal complaints
  • Digestive problems
  • Inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis)
  • Increased creatinine in the blood (indication of loss of kidney function)
  • Elevated liver enzymes and bilirubin levels
  • Liver diseases
  • Problems getting or maintaining an erection
  • Feeling sick, weakness (asthenia)
  • Thirst
  • Feeling of heat
  • Chest pain
  • Increased appetite
  • Weight gain

Rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people treated)

  • Low number of certain white blood cells (reduced lymphocyte count)
  • Reduced hematocrit (indicates a decrease in the volume of red blood cells)
  • Swelling of the eyelids, face, lips, tongue or throat, which can lead to breathing problems (angioedema)
  • Excessive loss of body fluids (dehydration)
  • Hallucinations
  • Fainting, loss of consciousness, almost fainting (presyncope)
  • Seizures
  • Appearance of fresh blood from the anus usually in or with the stool (hematochezia)
  • Breakthrough of an organ or the tissue surrounding the organ through the wall of the body cavity in which it is normally located (hernia)
  • Toothache
  • Tooth decay, holes in the teeth
  • Pain in the lower abdomen
  • Damage to the liver due to drug toxicity
  • Jaw pain
  • A disorder characterized by a sudden irresistible urge to urinate (urinary urgency)
  • Irregular menstruation
  • Bleeding from the vagina
  • Dryness of the female vulva and vagina
  • Feeling of coldness in the extremities (hands, feet)

FAQ's Mysimba

With Mysimba, patients can lose an average of around 1 kg per week. However, the actual result varies from person to person and depends on individual factors. The effect of Mysimba is most effective when it is combined with a permanent lifestyle change, including a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Mysimba may only be prescribed by a doctor. This requires a personal consultation during which the patient's state of health is thoroughly assessed.
