Rybelsus is an oral medication containing the active ingredient semaglutide. It is used for the treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes and is taken once daily as a tablet. The active ingredient belongs to the class of GLP-1 receptor agonists, supports blood sugar regulation, and may also affect appetite, satiety, and weight during treatment.
Correct use is important: Rybelsus is taken on an empty stomach with up to 120 ml of water. Afterwards, you should not eat or drink anything and should not take any other oral medication for at least 30 minutes. Who is Rybelsus suitable for?
Rybelsus is intended for adults with type 2 diabetes when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient to control blood sugar adequately. It may be considered as monotherapy if metformin is not suitable, or it may be used in combination with other medications for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Whether Rybelsus is appropriate in an individual case depends on the medical starting point, existing comorbidities, and concurrent medication.What is Rybelsus approved for?
Rybelsus is approved for the treatment of adults with insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes. It is used in addition to diet and exercise. Even though semaglutide may affect appetite, satiety, and weight, Rybelsus is not approved as a medication for weight management.How does Rybelsus work?
Rybelsus contains the active ingredient semaglutide. It belongs to the class of GLP-1 receptor agonists and mimics the effect of a natural gut hormone produced by the body. As a result, glucose-dependent insulin secretion may be supported, glucagon release may be reduced, and gastric emptying may be slowed down. In addition, the active ingredient may influence feelings of hunger and satiety. Because Rybelsus is taken as a tablet, patients often ask about the role of oral semaglutide compared with injections.Dosage and use
The dosage is always determined by a doctor. Rybelsus is taken once daily and should be swallowed whole with a small amount of water after a fasting period. Afterwards, you should not eat or drink anything and should not take any other oral medication for at least 30 minutes. These instructions for use are important because they affect how the active ingredient is absorbed. The tablet should not be split, crushed, or chewed. Rybelsus is developed and marketed by Novo Nordisk. The active ingredient semaglutide is also known from other treatment forms, but Rybelsus differs in that semaglutide is used here as a tablet rather than as an injection.Availability in Germany

The most common side effects of Rybelsus mainly include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and reduced appetite. These symptoms occur especially at the beginning of treatment or after a dose increase and improve over time in many patients. One reason for this is that semaglutide slows gastric emptying and affects appetite and satiety. Depending on the individual situation, other symptoms may also occur, such as constipation, belching, or reflux symptoms. Severe or persistent abdominal pain, significant fluid loss due to vomiting or diarrhea, signs of an allergic reaction, or symptoms that worsen rapidly should be medically assessed promptly. This applies especially if pre-existing conditions are present or if other medications are being taken at the same time.Safety, interactions, and contraindications
Before starting treatment, existing medical conditions and all current medications should be discussed with a doctor. Rybelsus can delay gastric emptying and may therefore affect the absorption of other oral medications. This is why correct use is particularly important with tablets. Special caution is required, among other things, in people with a history of pancreatitis, certain gastrointestinal conditions, or concurrent treatment with other blood sugar-lowering medications. The dosing instructions should also be followed strictly so that the absorption of the active ingredient is not affected.Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Rybelsus is not recommended during pregnancy. If a pregnancy is planned or occurs, treatment should be discussed with a doctor and discontinued if necessary. Use during breastfeeding should also only take place after an individual medical assessment. How does Rybelsus differ from other medications?
Rybelsus vs. Wegovy
Both medications contain semaglutide, but they differ in how they are used and what they are approved for. Rybelsus is taken once daily as a tablet and is approved for the treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes. Wegovy is injected once weekly and is approved for weight management. What matters is always the medical reason for which a medication is prescribed. Medications for weight management are generally excluded from statutory health insurance coverage in Germany.How can I stop taking Rybelsus?
Rybelsus should not be stopped, paused, or changed in dosage without medical advice. Whether treatment is ended or adjusted depends, among other things, on tolerability, blood sugar control, comorbidities, and concurrent medication. Especially in type 2 diabetes, any change in treatment should always take place under medical supervision. This allows a doctor to assess whether the current treatment should be continued, adjusted, or replaced with another therapy.Why must Rybelsus be taken on an empty stomach?
Rybelsus is taken on an empty stomach because otherwise the absorption of the active ingredient may be reduced. This is also why you should wait at least 30 minutes after taking it before eating, drinking, or taking another oral medication.
Can I drink coffee after taking Rybelsus?
Not immediately. In this context, coffee also counts as a beverage. You should therefore wait at least 30 minutes after taking it before having coffee, a larger amount of water, or breakfast.
Can Rybelsus be split, crushed, or chewed?
No. The tablet should be swallowed whole without chewing. Splitting, crushing, or chewing it may affect how the active ingredient is absorbed.
Can Rybelsus be taken together with metformin?
Yes, this may generally be possible. Depending on the medical assessment, Rybelsus may be used on its own or together with other medications for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Which combination is appropriate always depends on the individual metabolic situation.
Is Rybelsus suitable for type 1 diabetes?
No. Rybelsus is not intended for the treatment of type 1 diabetes. The medication is approved for adults with type 2 diabetes when blood sugar control is not sufficient with diet and exercise alone.
When should I seek medical advice while taking Rybelsus?
Medical advice should be sought for severe or persistent symptoms, especially intense abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, significant fluid loss, or symptoms that worsen rapidly.
