Wegovy Dosage: What Should You Pay Attention To?

The correct dosage of Wegovy is essential for safe and successful weight loss. A carefully managed dosage helps the medication work optimally while minimizing side effects. On this page, you will learn how to receive the right dose, what to pay attention to, and how to recognize when you should seek further medical help. We also explain what to do in such cases and how The Body Clinic can support you in your Wegovy treatment.

What Is Wegovy?

Wegovy is a prescription-only medication for weight reduction containing the active ingredient semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It was developed for adults with obesity (BMI ≥ 30) or severe overweight (BMI ≥ 27 with accompanying conditions). Wegovy mimics the natural hormone GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), which is released in the gut after eating, and acts on appetite centers in the brain. This increases feelings of fullness and reduces hunger and cravings, leading to lower calorie intake and supporting weight loss. It is administered once weekly using a pre-filled injection pen (the so-called Wegovy pen). As with any medication, side effects can occur—such as gastrointestinal issues like nausea or diarrhea (you can find more information on our main Wegovy page and on our Side Effects page).

How to Use Wegovy Correctly

Wegovy is available by prescription only, meaning you can only receive it with a doctor’s authorization. It is administered once weekly as a subcutaneous injection (under the skin) using the pre-filled Wegovy pen. To use Wegovy safely and correctly, please follow these guidelines:

  • Stick to Weekly Dosing: Inject Wegovy once a week, ideally on the same day each week.
  • Administer Subcutaneous Injections: Use the Wegovy pen to inject under the skin (subcutaneously). Suitable injection sites include the lower abdomen (at least 5 cm away from the navel), the front of the thigh, or the upper arm.
  • Rotate Injection Sites: Choose a different site for each injection to avoid skin irritation or hardening. For example, rotate between abdomen, thigh, and upper arm, or vary the exact spot within the same area.
  • Prepare for Injection: Always check the pen before use—the solution must be clear and colorless. Use a new sterile needle for every injection. Clean the injection site with an alcohol swab before applying the pen.
  • After Injection: Always dispose of used pens and needles safely (e.g., in a designated sharps container).
  • Establish a Routine: Choose a regular “Wegovy Day” each week. Setting a reminder in your calendar or on your phone can help you remember your weekly injection. If you need to switch the day, that’s possible—just ensure there are at least 3 days between injections. Your medical team at The Body Clinic is happy to answer any questions about injection techniques to help you use Wegovy safely and effectively.

Which Wegovy Dosages Are Available?

Wegovy is prescription-only and therefore available at the pharmacy only with a valid medical prescription. The medication comes in five different dosage strengths. Treatment typically begins with the lowest dose, which is then gradually increased to minimize side effects. The available pre-filled Wegovy pens are:

  • 0.25 mg semaglutide (starting dose)
  • 0.5 mg semaglutide
  • 1.0 mg semaglutide
  • 1.7 mg semaglutide
  • 2.4 mg semaglutide

These different strengths allow for a gradual increase, helping patients adjust to the medication while minimizing the risk of side effects. Treatment starts with 0.25 mg weekly. The next higher dose can begin at least 4 weeks later, always after consultation with your physician, until the appropriate maximum dose with satisfactory weight loss is reached. This careful approach improves tolerability and reduces the risk of side effects (especially gastrointestinal issues) during dose escalation.

How Long Should You Take Wegovy?

How long you should use Wegovy depends on your personal goals and how you respond to the medication. It is recommended for long-term use, since sustainable weight loss usually requires long-term therapy. Short-term use often leads to regaining the lost weight once treatment stops. Studies show that people can lose weight with the medication over 1–2 years. Additionally, the chance of keeping the weight off improves with lasting lifestyle changes, and it takes time for a new lifestyle to become a habit. This suggests that longer-term treatment is often advisable to achieve lasting success.

It is essential that therapy be individually tailored and medically supervised. For example, your doctor at The Body Clinic will regularly monitor your progress and work with you to decide how long Wegovy should be used in your specific case. Regular check-ups are recommended during Wegovy treatment to adjust dose or duration if needed. Never stop taking Wegovy on your own, without consulting your doctor, as this can lead to weight regain.

In general: Treatment lasts as long as necessary to reach your health goals. Within The Body Clinic’s programs, this is continuously monitored and supported.

Forgot a Wegovy Dose?

It can happen that you miss a planned Wegovy injection or don’t take it at the intended time. In this case, stay calm and follow the instructions in the package leaflet:

  • If less than 4 days have passed since your scheduled injection, take the missed dose as soon as possible. Then resume your usual weekly schedule by injecting on your originally planned day.
  • If more than 5 days have passed since your scheduled injection, skip the missed dose entirely and wait until your next regular weekly injection day to resume.

Important: There should never be less than 3 days between two Wegovy injections. Never inject two doses at once to make up for a missed injection. If you’re unsure, consult your doctor before continuing treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Wegovy

Yes, at the start of treatment the Wegovy dose is usually increased step by step. You begin with 0.25 mg weekly and increase over several weeks until reaching the doctor-recommended dose, which can vary by person. If side effects such as nausea occur, your doctor may advise a slower increase.

Yes, a stepwise dose escalation is an essential part of the treatment plan. Therapy starts with a low dose (0.25 mg weekly) and is gradually increased in four-week intervals in consultation with your doctor until an appropriate maintenance dose is reached. This approach is necessary to help your body adjust and reduce side effects.

Wegovy (semaglutide) can lower blood sugar because it promotes insulin release and suppresses the counter-regulatory hormone glucagon. For people without diabetes, this effect is usually mild (in studies, HbA1c dropped only slightly). In patients with diabetes, semaglutide helps improve blood sugar control but carries a risk of hypoglycemia, especially if combined with insulin or sulfonylureas. Close coordination with your doctor is essential. Overall, Wegovy improves glucose metabolism through its mechanism, but dosage impact is mainly relevant when combined with existing diabetes treatments.

No. Wegovy is a prescription-only medication and is not available over the counter. In Germany, you can only obtain it at a pharmacy with a valid prescription. This is because the weight-loss injection is approved only for specific medical indications (obesity or severe overweight with comorbidities) and must be used under medical supervision. Offers that promise Wegovy without a prescription are unreliable, with a risk of counterfeits or unsafe use. Always stick to the legal route via your doctor and pharmacy.

A pre-filled Wegovy pen contains 4 injections, meaning it lasts 4 weeks. Each pen holds four single doses of its specific strength—for example, the 0.25 mg pen includes four doses of 0.25 mg each. We encourage you to refill your supply in good time to ensure uninterrupted continuation of your treatment. Your care team at The Body Clinic is happy to support you in this.
